Overview

About the Destinations:

A trek to Mystery Lake of Uttarakhand i.e. Roopkund Lake is a must-do for an avid trekker! Battling several adversities common to the Himalayas, this water body perched in the laps of the snow clad Mt. Trishul is situated at an altitude of 16,499ft.

Most attractive for the human skeletons lying at the bottom of the lake, which are distinctly visible when the snow melts, the lake is swarmed by plenitude of visitors.

The route along this trek is a fascinating journey of discovering the most pristine of Himalayan contribution of oak and blooming rhododendron forests. A moderate trek, the trek trails through mountainous rivers, enthralling ridges, lush forests and scenic meadows.

Roopkund Trek Altitude: 5,029m

Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Arrival

  • Day 2 - Trek from Lohajung to Didna Village

    Lohajung Pass, Bedni Ganga River

Today you will begin with the trek to Roopkund Glacier Lake! Take the Lord Curzon trail from Lohajung and follow a steady uphill trek through the Lohajung Pass, which eventually leads to a downhill trail to the Bedni River. Cross the bridge over the river and traverse through mixed forests of oak and bamboo to arrive at Didna Village. This is your first base camp on the trek route; overnight stay in tents.

  • Day 3 - Trek from Didna Village to Ali Bugyal

Steep Trek, Oak & Bamboo Forests, Garhwal Himalayas

After a wholesome breakfast, leave the basecamp and begin with a steep ascend through oak forests and long stands of bamboo. Admire the stunning views of the Garhwal Himalayan ranges as they appear ahead of you. Arrive at one of the finest camping grounds with stunning views on this side of the Himalayas as you enter open alpine grazing meadows of Ali Bugyal; overnight stay in here.

  • Day 4 - Trek from Ali Bugyal to Ghora Lotani

    Easy Trek, Panoramic Himalayas, Magpie

Today’s trek will be an easier one and will take you to the other side of the ridge; a keen eye can spot a Himalayan Magpie on the way. Following today’s breakfast in the camp, start with the trek for the day. Today, as you proceed forward, you will be gaining height from 12,500-14,500ft. Be prepared for some challenges offered by high altitudes, zigzag passes and icy cold winds. Passing through Kalu Vinayak, you will finally reach Bhagwabasa (4,100m) campsite in a desolate and barren landscape; overnight stay in tents.

  • Day 6 - Trek from Bhagwabasa – Roopkund Lake – Bedni Bugyal (via Bhagwabasa)

Starting with an early morning breakfast, today you will be trekking to the mysterious Roopkund Lake. This uninhabited landmark in the laps of Mt. Trishul has overwhelmed many travellers with its innumerable stories. Roopkund trek tests our stamina and internal strength, after a days long trekking and sightseeing you will get highly tired and so trekking is not so easy here. Camping is quite restful and sightseeing includes exquisite places. I have seen nothing more scenic than the roopkund lake. Enjoyed the overall experience.

The trekking experience was great. I had a really really fun filled trek. The beautiful surrounding, the bird’s eye view of the place, and everything else added more beauty to the travel experience. the roopkund was mostly frozen, and when we went close you could actually see the skeltons on the bed of the lake. oThis trip is something that I can never ever forget the final climb to roopkund was very difficult and tedious but it was worth it. I totally loved this trek. I wish I could take more such treks in the future.

The Roopkund trek experience was amazing. It was in fact great. We liked the whole trek, and it was something that I would never forget. The trek was quite tedious to say the least. However, the beauty of the nature overpowers the toughness of the trek, we had a great time.

Wow! So finally a big thing off my travel bucket list. A trek to Mystery Lake of Uttarakhand. Also known as the Roopkund Lake, this place is a must-trek spot for any avid traveller and trekker. Well, to start with this trek is not for everyone. To complete this trek you must battle many adversities. I was successfully able to do it, and hence I finished this trek. If you sense pride when I say this, yes I am proud. I worked out for 3 years to achieve this and I trekked other less risky and less intense mountains ever fortnight to improve my willpower and stamina. This trek is a must for serious trekkers.

Roopkund Trekking is all a trekker ever needs. Only if you try this trek you will know how awesome it is. Roopkund trekking – WOW! The trekking was awesome and fun. In fact, the trekking was quite a lot more than fun. I would personally recommend this trek, if you are an avid trekker. This might not be as fun as it sounds to others because instead of enjoying the trek you would become tired and frustrated by the trek as you lack experience and stamina. Otherwise this trek is as good as they get.
